Edmonton is the capital of the province of Alberta and its cultural, governmental, and educational center. Nicknamed “The Festival City,” it hosts festivals throughout the year. With a relatively dry climate, it is also one of Canada’s sunniest cities. Edmonton offers many tourist attractions, including West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping mall in North America. Opened in 1981, the mall features numerous indoor attractions such as an ice rink, amusement park, and water park, as well as more than 800 shops, a hotel, and a New Orleans–themed bar area. Edmonton is also home to Fort Edmonton Park, the largest living history museum in Canada. Historically a hub for Alberta’s petrochemical industry—earning it the nickname “Oil Capital of Canada”—Edmonton is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The city itself is a worthwhile destination, made even more special by its residents: Edmonton is a big city with a small-town feel.
