Sun Peaks was formerly known as Tod Mountain. Since purchasing the resort in 1992, the ski area’s owners have invested over $375 million and plan to invest an additional $70 million. Their goal is to establish Sun Peaks as a four-season destination resort. The mountain offers 122 runs with an average annual snowfall of about 220 inches, served by 12 lifts (both chairlifts and surface lifts). There is extensive open-bowl skiing. Off the slopes, Sun Peaks features seven on-mountain hotels along with many condominiums and chalets providing a total of about 3,000 beds. Additional lodging is available in Kamloops, located 45 minutes away. With the addition of 522 acres of new terrain for the 2014/15 season, the ski area will expand to 4,200 acres, making it the second-largest ski area in Canada after Whistler. The current 3,678-acre domain will be increased by 110 acres of new trails on West Morrisey (between the Back in Time and Static Cling runs) and 412 acres of terrain on the existing backcountry zone known as Gil’s, on Mt. Tod. Gil’s will remain a hike-in (from the 5 Mile trail accessed via the Burfield chairlift) / ski-out area, with a lower run-out that increases the current vertical drop.
