Cape Cod is one of the quintessential summer destinations on the East Coast of the United States. Located between Boston and New York, it was one of the first places in North America to be settled by the English Pilgrims who arrived aboard the Mayflower in the fall of 1620. Before their arrival, this area was inhabited by the Wampanoag tribe. Today it is an ideal place for a road trip, stopping in different towns or following a route that connects its many lighthouses and idyllic landscapes, where the coastline in many areas remains in a wild state because strong ocean erosion has prevented the construction of large hotel complexes. Some of the cities and towns you shouldn’t miss are Hyannis, one of the largest communities on Cape Cod and the classic summer retreat of the Kennedy family; Sandwich, a small town that was one of the first settlements in the area; Chatham, a charming village with a must-see lighthouse that is one of the most famous on the Cape; and Provincetown, one of the liveliest and most gay‑friendly towns, full of entertainment and nightlife. If you go, don’t forget to try their famous lobster. Other interesting stops include Eastham, Truro, and Falmouth.
