Cumbuco is a small fishing village about 25 kilometres (16 miles) northwest of the city of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará, on Brazil’s northeast coast. With a population of around 1,600, it is considered a picturesque, scenic village that attracts both domestic and international tourists. Cumbuco features a beautiful, quiet beach on one side of town near Fortaleza and famous sand dunes on the other. The compact, lively village center is built around a main square next to the beach, with a fresh fish market, tropical palm trees, and several beachfront restaurants (barracas). Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Cumbuco offers excellent conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with mild air and water temperatures and strong, consistent southeast trade winds from July to January. The sand dunes behind the village create a thermal effect that increases wind speed. Cumbuco is an ideal kite destination for both beginners and advanced riders, with a wide sandy beach, reliable side-shore winds in season, and many beach hotels, pousadas, and kite clubs. The state of Ceará has more than 300 km (186 miles) of beaches, which are popular for downwind trips and kite safaris.
