Goa, a state on India’s west coast, is a former Portuguese colony with a rich history. It offers a distinctive blend of Indian and Portuguese cultures and architecture that draws about 2.5 million visitors each year. Goa looks and feels noticeably different from much of the rest of India, largely due to 451 years of Portuguese rule that kept it relatively isolated. The population is a mix of Hindus and Roman Catholics, reflected in its Catholic churches and Hindu temples. Goa has an unusually large number of scenic towns and villages, each with its own character. Panaji is the state capital, while Old Goa is home to renowned sixteenth‑century churches, convents, and monuments. The state has more than its fair share of museums, art galleries, and libraries. In Panaji, you’ll find many government‑run institutions, including the Goa State Museum, the Kala Academy, the Central Library, and the Goa Science Centre. In Vasco da Gama, the Naval Aviation Museum showcases vintage aircraft. Old Goa is a key destination for Christian religious art and some secular works as well, with the Christian Art Museum and a modern art gallery featuring the surrealist Dom Martin. In Mormugao, the Religious Museum of the Blessed Joseph Vaz adds to the region’s cultural offerings, while the Xavier Centre of Historical Research in Bardez has a gallery dedicated to Christian art. Beyond its major cities, Goa also includes a number of smaller, charming—though sometimes crowded—towns along the beach belt, such as Calangute and Candolim, which are popular with both domestic and international visitors.
