King Abdullah Economic City is a major development project in Saudi Arabia that began in 2005. The future city is being built on the Red Sea coast, about 100 km north of Jeddah, with a total planned urban area of 168 km². Located between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina and the commercial hub of Jeddah, it is designed with large buildings and skyscrapers and aims to become one of the most important cities in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East. The project is estimated to cost around 100 billion riyals (about 26.6 billion US dollars). The city is intended to serve as an economic hub for Saudi youth. Key access routes will include a port with an annual capacity of 10 million TEU containers, an international airport, and a railway connecting major cities across Saudi Arabia.
