Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, previously known as Hluhluwe–Umfolozi Game Reserve, is the oldest established nature reserve in Africa. Covering 960 square kilometers (96,000 hectares) of hilly terrain, it is located 280 kilometers (170 miles) north of Durban in central Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The park is renowned for its abundant wildlife and conservation initiatives. It is the only state-managed park in KwaZulu-Natal where all of the Big Five game animals can be found. Thanks to conservation efforts, the park now boasts the largest population of white rhinos in the world. However, the rhinos and the park's wilderness areas are currently under threat from plans to construct an open-cast coal mine right on the park's border, a proposal that a growing coalition of organizations is actively opposing.
