Newport is a seaside city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, Rhode Island. Located on Narragansett Bay, it lies about 33 miles (53 km) southeast of Providence, 20 miles (32 km) south of Fall River, Massachusetts, 74 miles (119 km) south of Boston, and 180 miles (290 km) northeast of New York City. A classic New England summer resort, it’s renowned for its historic Gilded Age mansions and its rich sailing and yachting heritage. Newport hosted the first U.S. Open tournaments in both tennis and golf, and was the site of every America’s Cup challenge from 1930 to 1983. The city is home to Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport, which includes the U.S. Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major Navy training center. Once a significant 18th‑century port, it still preserves many Colonial‑era buildings. Newport is the county seat of Newport County, though the county government today is largely limited to court administration and sheriff’s corrections functions. It was also famous as the location of the “Summer White Houses” during the presidencies of Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. As of the 2020 census, the population is 25,163. Surrounded by ocean on nearly all sides, Newport typically stays cooler in summer than many coastal cities farther north, including Boston.
