Sapporo is the capital and largest city of the northern island of Hokkaido. The city features many key sights: the Sapporo Clock Tower, which has been keeping time for over a century; the former Hokkaido Government Office Building, a neo-baroque landmark known as “Red Brick” that is illuminated at night; and the poplar trees outside Hokkaido University (formerly Hokkaido Agricultural College). Odori Park stretches more than 1,400 meters across the city center. In summer it is filled with beer gardens, while in winter it becomes the setting for the Sapporo Snow Festival, when the park is lined with impressive snow sculptures and beautiful ice statues.
