Parksville is a city on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is located along Highway 19A, 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Nanaimo, 30 miles (48 km) east of Port Alberni, and about 4 miles (7 km) southeast of Qualicum Beach. Most of Parksville lies between the Englishman River and French Creek, with a significant portion extending east of the Englishman River along the west shore of Craig Bay. As of the 2016 Census, Parksville had a population of 12,514, a 4.5% increase from 2011. Parksville is known for its wide sandy beaches at Parksville Bay and Craig Bay. Since 1982, its most famous annual event has been a sandcastle-building competition held from mid-July to mid-August, called “Parksville Beachfest.” Beachfest is the only official qualifying event in Canada for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. Local media, businesses, and public services often refer to Parksville and the neighboring municipalities as the “Oceanside” community, a term that typically includes Qualicum Beach, French Creek, Coombs/Hilliers, Errington, Nanoose, Bowser, and Deep Bay.
