Spitzkoppe Namibia

Spitzkoppe is a group of striking bald granite peaks (inselbergs) in the Namib Desert of Namibia, located between the towns of Usakos and Swakopmund. The granite here is over 120 million years old, with the highest outcrop rising to about 1,784 meters (5,853 feet) above sea level and towering roughly 700 meters (2,300 feet) above the surrounding desert floor. A nearby lesser summit, known as Little Spitzkoppe, reaches 1,584 meters (5,197 feet), and additional rocky prominences extend into the Pontok Mountains range. The area is famous for its dramatic contrast with the flat plains around it, its numerous examples of ancient Bushmen rock paintings, and its role as a filming location for the “Dawn of Man” sequences in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
