Kuala Terengganu Malaysia

Kuala Terengganu is the largest city and the state and royal capital of Terengganu, Malaysia. It is located about 500 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur on a promontory surrounded on three sides by the South China Sea. The name means “river mouth of Terengganu,” referring to the broad estuary of the Terengganu River, which flows into the ocean at this point. When Kuala Terengganu was founded there was only one street, called Kampung Cina (Chinatown). It was established in the 15th century by a family of Chinese merchants who traded between China and the Malay Peninsula. Evidence of this can be seen in the Chinese families who still live there and in the centuries‑old buildings. Kuala Terengganu quickly became an important trading hub between the two regions. However, after the Malacca Sultanate took control of the city, its influence as a major Southeast Asian port declined, as most merchants preferred to stop in Malacca, which became the main center of trade between China, India, and Southeast Asia. The main tourist attractions include Chinatown, Pasar Payang (Central Market), the Sultan’s Palace, the State Museum, and Pulau Duyong.
