Welgevonden Game Reserve is a 36,000-hectare private game reserve in the Waterberg District of South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Nestled within the internationally recognised UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, it is a flagship destination for the sustainable conservation of biodiversity. Just a 2.5-hour drive or an easy 45-minute flight from Johannesburg into one of the reserve’s airstrips, Welgevonden is one of the country’s most accessible premier, malaria-free Big Five wilderness reserves. Welgevonden offers an exclusive, intimate bushveld safari experience, with only a limited number of guests allowed in the reserve at any one time. Guests are collected at the gate by a qualified field guide and transferred to their respective game lodges within the reserve. The mountainous bushveld is a year-round destination thanks to its high altitude, temperate climate and malaria-free status. The reserve is not open to day visitors. Welgevonden is home to more than 65 mammal species. While these include the famous Big Five, it is the rarer and more unusual species like cheetah, brown hyena, caracal, aardwolf and aardvark that make game drives especially exciting. The reserve’s diverse range of habitats supports an impressive array of biodiversity, including over 300 bird species. From cheetah-loved grasslands and savannahs to leafy wooded mountains carved by deep rocky ravines, Welgevonden has it all. In addition to the wildlife, ancient Bushman rock art sites are scattered throughout the reserve, offering curious travellers a unique cultural experience during their guided safari.
