3. Sun Moon Lake
Stop
About the destination: Sun Moon Lake, nestled in the mountains of central Taiwan, is one of the country’s most scenic and romantic getaways. The lake gets its name from its unique shape: one side resembles a crescent moon, while the other evokes the round shape of the sun. Misty peaks, dense forests, and calm turquoise waters make this a peaceful escape from Taiwan’s bustling cities, and its mild climate means it’s worth visiting year‑round. The lakeside towns of Shuishe and Ita Thao are the main bases for visitors, offering a good range of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and cafés. Shuishe is more modern and convenient, while Ita Thao, located within the aboriginal Thao tribe’s traditional territory, has a livelier night market atmosphere and more local snacks. Ferries shuttle between the two sides of the lake, making it easy to explore both areas, visit temples, and enjoy different viewpoints in a single day. Outdoor activities are a highlight here. A well-maintained cycling path encircles much of the lake and is considered one of the most beautiful bike routes in Asia, with sections passing over the water on graceful bridges. You can also hike forest trails to panoramic viewpoints, rent a paddleboat or kayak, or simply take a leisure cruise to appreciate the scenery from the water. Don’t miss the iconic Wenwu Temple overlooking the lake, as well as Ci’en Pagoda, which offers sweeping views from its hilltop perch. Cultural experiences add depth to any visit. The nearby Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village combines an amusement park with exhibitions showcasing the traditions of Taiwan’s indigenous groups. Around Ita Thao, you can sample millet wine, wild boar sausages, and other local specialties that reflect aboriginal heritage. Whether you come for a romantic weekend, a family holiday, or a quiet solo escape, Sun Moon Lake offers a memorable blend of nature, culture, and relaxation.

Stay
About the destination: Kaohsiung City is a special municipality in southern Taiwan facing the Taiwan Strait. It is the largest municipality by area, at 2,951.85 km² (1,139.72 sq mi), stretching from Mt. Jade to Taiping Island, and the second most populous city proper in Taiwan, with a population of about 2.77 million. Since its beginnings in the 17th century as a small trading village, Kaohsiung has developed into the political, economic, transportation, manufacturing, refining, shipbuilding, and industrial center of southern Taiwan. It is classified as a global city with ‘sufficiency’ status by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (2012). Kaohsiung International Airport is the second-largest airport in Taiwan. The Port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s largest harbor, is located adjacent to but not officially within Kaohsiung City. Freeway 1’s southern terminal is in Kaohsiung. For north–south rail travel, the city is served by the Taiwan Railways Administration’s Western Line and Pingtung Line, and the Taiwan High Speed Rail offers fast, frequent connections to Taipei. The Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), the city’s subway system, began operation in early 2008. Kaohsiung hosted the 2009 World Games, a multi-sport event featuring disciplines not included in the Olympic Games. The city also houses the Republic of China Navy’s fleet headquarters and naval academy.

6. Taitung
Stay
About the destination: Discover Taitung: Taiwan’s Coastal Gem Set along Taiwan’s serene southeastern coast, Taitung is where natural beauty, rich culture, and a relaxed pace of life come together. Framed by lush mountains on one side and the vast Pacific Ocean on the other, this captivating city offers a peaceful retreat from Taiwan’s busier urban centers. Its tranquil scenery, Indigenous heritage, and lively festivals make Taitung a place that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor. Start by exploring Taitung’s scenic coastline, where the blue waters of the Pacific gently meet golden sandy shores. Beaches like Jhiben and Sanxiantai are perfect for sunbathing, surfing, or simply taking in the sea views. Sanxiantai, famous for its striking eight-arched bridge leading to a small offshore island, is especially popular with sunrise chasers and nature lovers. Inland, the East Rift Valley reveals a patchwork of rice fields, hot springs, and calm rural villages. Rent a bike and follow the cycling paths through this green countryside, pausing at local markets to taste fresh produce and classic Taiwanese snacks. Taitung is also a vibrant center of Taiwan’s Indigenous cultures, where traditions are proudly preserved and shared. The National Museum of Prehistory and the Taitung Aboriginal Culture Park offer engaging exhibits that highlight the history, art, and daily life of Taiwan’s first peoples. Plan your trip around one of Taitung’s many festivals—such as the dramatic Bombing of Master Han Dan or the colorful Taitung Hot Air Balloon Festival—to see the region burst into life with music, performances, and celebration. Adventure seekers will find plenty to do in the hills and plains surrounding the city. Hike through lush mountain trails, or head to the Luye Plateau for paragliding and wide-open views over the valley and coast. After a day of exploration, unwind at the Zhiben Hot Springs, where soothing, mineral-rich waters provide the perfect way to relax both body and mind. Unspoiled and welcoming, Taitung offers an authentic slice of Taiwan. With its stunning landscapes, meaningful cultural experiences, and warm-hearted locals, it’s a destination that feels both peaceful and full of life. Whether you’re looking to reconnect with nature, dive into local traditions, or simply slow down and recharge, Taitung is ready to welcome you.

7. Hualien
Stay
About the destination: Hualien (花蓮; Huālián) is the second-largest city on Taiwan’s east coast and one of the most pleasant small cities in the country. Many travelers use it as a base, even when Taroko Gorge is their main destination, because it offers a wider range of food and accommodation. Budget travelers will find everything they need around the train station. Head east to Meilunshan Park (Měilúnshān Gōngyuán) and the harbor area for wide streets, landscaped parks, bike lanes, and ocean views, along with boutique hotels and higher-end restaurants. The name Hualien means “eddies” in Hokkien (Taiwanese). According to local lore, Qing-dynasty immigrants gave the area this name after noticing the swirling waters just off the coast. While tourism is a major source of income, nearby limestone deposits have also made Hualien the cement capital of Taiwan.
