About the destination: Shirahama is a resort town on the south coast of Wakayama Prefecture. Its beaches have featured white sand since ancient times, although additional sand was imported from Perth, Australia in the 1980s after waves and typhoons washed some of it away. Shirahama is famous for its hot springs, and during July and August fireworks are held every night on the beach. Shirahama Station is about two and a half hours from Osaka on JR West’s Ocean Arrow train service. There are also daily flights from Nanki-Shirahama Airport to Tokyo International Airport (Haneda). On March 1, 2006, the town of Hikigawa in Nishimuro District was merged into Shirahama. As of January 31, 2012, Shirahama had an estimated population of 23,325 in 11,149 households, with a population density of about 116 persons per km² and a total area of 201.04 km².
