About the destination: Since the 1970s, Moalboal has developed a tourism industry centered on recreational diving and beaches. Panagsama Beach (Basdiot) is where most resorts and restaurants are located, while farther north on the peninsula, in Saavedra, is White Beach (Basdako), a two‑kilometre stretch of sand. Once visited mostly by locals, White Beach has since become a destination for international tourists. Most visitors to Moalboal stay either at Panagsama Beach (Basdiot) or White Beach (Basdako), both situated about 3–5 kilometres from the main bus stop in town. Recreational diving is the main tourist activity in Moalboal, and the reefs along the west coast of the Copton Peninsula host a rich variety of marine life. Pescador Island, about 3 kilometres off the coast, is the most popular dive spot, featuring an underwater cave known as “The Cathedral.” The underwater scenery is spectacular, with some of the country’s best dive sites following the reef that runs along the entire coastline. This makes Moalboal ideal for scuba diving, snorkeling, and freediving, with a shallow drop‑off near the shore that plunges to depths of more than 40 metres. The area is also known as a sanctuary for sea turtles and massive schools of sardines. Whale sharks, dolphins, and thresher sharks are also occasionally seen appearing out of the blue.
