3. Gergeti
Stay
About the destination: Perched high above the town of Stepantsminda and framed by the dramatic silhouette of Mount Kazbek, Gergeti is one of Georgia’s most iconic destinations. The focal point is Gergeti Trinity Church, a 14th‑century stone sanctuary that seems to float between earth and sky at 2,170 meters above sea level. From its terrace, the panoramic views of snow‑capped peaks, deep valleys, and winding rivers capture the wild essence of the Greater Caucasus. Reaching Gergeti is an experience in itself. Travelers can opt for a steep but rewarding 1.5–2 hour hike from Stepantsminda, traversing meadows dotted with wildflowers in summer and pristine snow in winter. For a less strenuous approach, 4x4 vehicles are available and can make the climb within 20–30 minutes, following a rough mountain track with equally impressive viewpoints along the way. The atmosphere at Gergeti Trinity Church combines spiritual calm and raw natural power. While the church is still in use, visitors are welcome to enter—just remember to dress modestly and speak quietly inside. On clear days, the towering cone of Mount Kazbek rises behind the church, making sunrise and sunset particularly spectacular times to visit and photograph. Gergeti also serves as a gateway to wider adventures in the Kazbegi region. Nearby, you’ll find chilled-out guesthouses, cozy cafés serving khachapuri and khinkali, and opportunities for horseback riding, paragliding, and longer treks deeper into the mountains. Whether you’re a serious hiker, a photographer, or a casual traveler, Gergeti offers a memorable blend of culture, history, and high‑altitude scenery.

Stay
About the destination: Mestia is a small town located in the highlands of northwest Georgia, situated at an elevation of 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) in the Caucasus Mountains. Mestia is found in the Svaneti region of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti province, approximately 128 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of the regional capital, Zugdidi. Mestia, along with the surrounding 132 villages, make up the Mestia District. The district spans an area of 30,444 square kilometers (11,754 square miles) and has a population of 9,316, with 1,973 residing in the town itself, according to the 2014 Georgia census. The town was granted the status of a townlet (a term in Georgian known as "daba") in 1968. Historically and ethnographically, Mestia has always been considered the main community of the Upper Svaneti province, also known as Zemo. It was previously known as Seti. The majority of the population are Svans, a cultural and linguistic subgroup of the Georgians. Despite its small size, the town has been a significant center of Georgian culture for centuries and is home to several medieval monuments, such as churches and forts, which are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Mestia is serviced by the Queen Tamar Airport, which has been operated by the state-owned company, United Airports of Georgia, since 2010.
